The privacy question every AI journaling app should answer

A journal is the most private thing most people write. It contains thoughts you have never said aloud, fears you have not shared with anyone, and memories attached to real people in your life.

When an AI reads your journal to answer questions about your past, something has to process that text. The question is: where does it go?

For most AI journaling apps, the answer is: to OpenAI or another third-party provider. Your entries are sent to an external API, processed, and the answer comes back. Journey, one of the most popular journaling apps, is explicit about this in their documentation.

This matters because:

You cannot control what a third-party provider does with data once it is received.
Third-party providers train on data unless you explicitly opt out, and opt-out policies vary.
Your journal contains information about real people who never consented to their stories being processed.
